News and Announcements
I maintain a list of announcements that have been emailed to all users. I do
this very rarely and only when I think that my user community would benefit. At maximum, I can see
sending out 1 message every 6 months although so far I've averaged 3 per decade.
April 21, 2010
- Finally added the flash-hack to add the address to the clipboard.
March 23, 2010
- Added a spam white-list feature for those folks who need to add exceptions to the spam filtering.
March 19, 2010
- Primary mail server suffered a major crash which required an immediate migration. Decided to dive in and
do the hard push to new mailer. Took about 18 hours to come back online on the new box. This has resulted in
a much better system with a better mail server software with significantly faster deliver, better SMTP rules,
better plugin support, etc..
- Finally added Spam mail detection and sequestering on the site. I did this as much as a user feature as
protection for MailNull. When gmail detected spam on a message sent through MailNull, MailNull would get
blamed. Although some people have not been happy with it, I think it is a real step forward. Sorry it was
necessary.
- Added an opt-requested feature of auto-created addresses. If enabled, mail to an unknown address will
cause a confirmation message to be sent to your mailbox. You can then come to the website and confirm the
address creation or delete the address for good.
- One by-product of the auto-create is that I've been forced to scour my logs for the names of any
addresses created in the past. Now when a slow is deleted it is set with the delete flag. This is helpful if
you ever try to create the same address in the future so you can be warned.
February 26, 2010
- Added a better password recovery system using your email address. Got rid of the account 'hint' which
really never worked.
February 9, 2009
- Finally got around to migrating the main database to a new backend server. Also upgraded my Postgres
version. Mail server is still less than perfect but the database looks great.
August 10, 2005
- Added automatic address expiration. When you create an address you can ask it to be automatically
deleted after a certain number of messages have been received on it, or after a certain amount of time has
past. Very handy for those addresses which are very temporary.
June 9, 2005
- I've installed the ClamAV virus scanner into the mail forwarding chain which can detect 35000 viruses,
worms, trojans, and phishing emails. Although the messages that are caught will be cleaned, it is highly
recommended that you have a virus utility running on your computer to protect against viruses that slip
through as well as those from other messages and applications.
February 3, 2005
- I've added (by popular demand) a feature where you can send mail to a 3rd party so that it comes from a
mailnull address. If you go to the List Addresses page, you should see a Edit Del Mail links associated with
each address. The Mail link will take you to a page where you can send mail to someone else from that
address. This will allow people to send mail to help addresses from a mailnull address or reply to mail
previously sent to one of their addresses without exposing their real email address.
January 16, 2005
- I've added a new email editing page and the ability to have multiple
administrative and forwarding email addresses.
December 9, 2004
- Added the feature this morning where mailnull.com mail servers will [finally] bounce invalid or deleted
email addresses. It will not bounce addresses that are disabled and not forwarding to your email address.
This will hopefully help with removing old addresses from spam lists and better informing legitimate people
that they have an old address.
March 17, 2004
- Reworked the address management code. I've added a new mail redirect program and tracking of message
counts and sizes. Look for the mailnull.com Received mail header as well as the X-Mailnull-To: mail field.
Also, the account status information now has the count and size information.
February 22, 2004
- Reworked the internal session management code which, unfortunately, means that all of the current
sessions have been invalidated. My apologies but I believe that the changes will provide a more stable
system.
February 2, 2004
- Sent out an announcement to the users updating them on the latest features. I
specifically hoped with the delete account capabilities, users would remove old or unused accounts. The
announcement also introduced the WebMail feature and the splitting up of the mailnull script into the /cgi-bin
directory.
- Finished the first take of the WebMail contact form feature. Users can add a
contact form to their pages without posting their email address.
January 27, 2004
- Split the main CGI script into a directory of scripts in /cgi-bin for easier management and feature
development.
- Added account create confirmation with an email confirmation message.
- Added new delete confirmation with an email confirmation message.
- Added some smaller features including edit buttons on the slot create results page.
October 8, 2003
- Sent out an announcement to the users updating them on the latest
features.
- Added forums to the web site to give people a place to report problems, ask questions, or discuss various
topics..
October 7, 2003
Added a Javascript page to the web site with a couple little scripts and
hacks to simplify the MailNull UI.
Sep 25, 2003
Added a NOTE section to the status page so when you delete or edit a slot, it does not show a confirmation
page, just a note line at the top of the status page. I hope that this is a lot faster for those of you who
edit and delete slots frequently.
Jan 4, 2003
Added a secure (https) flag to the account which will redirect you to secure web pages whenever possible.
Also added secure prompts to all login and account creation pages. This will allow you to store your
important account username and passwords in the mailnull system securely. To adjust your secure flag,
please edit your account.
Dec 20, 2002
Finally added the session and cookie authentication code that I've been meaning to do for a while. Still
tuning it a bit but in general the system now supports storing sessions and a browser cookie (if supported)
for all authentication. If you browser does not support cookies, you still should be able to authenticate and
perform an action but every command will prompt you again for your login and password.
Sep 1, 2001
Added a password hint to the account creation page. If you lose your password, the system can email a
hint to your email address. Please edit your account to add one.
Please consider donating money to the
cause, putting a link to us on your page,
and spreading the word about MailNull.
